Privacy Policy

The short version

Explore Fancy Gap has no accounts, no ads and no newsletter. We use Google Analytics to see which pages people read and what the road and fog conditions were when they arrived. This page lists every outside company your browser contacts when you load this site, and why.

Analytics

Every page loads Google Analytics 4. It records that a page was viewed, the approximate location the visit came from (Google derives this from the IP address and does not pass the address on to us), the device and browser type, and a small number of interaction events — for example, the travel conditions shown on arrival, or that a live camera was opened. It sets two cookies, _ga and _ga_<id>, to recognise a returning browser.

Google Analytics is also set to record scrolling, outbound clicks, site search, video engagement, file downloads and the fact that a form was interacted with. That last one records that a form was used, not what was typed in it.

Two things it is deliberately not set up to do. Google Signals — the setting that links activity to signed-in Google accounts across devices and feeds ads personalisation — is turned off. And no advertising or remarketing audiences are built from this data.

Analytics data is deleted after 14 months. We look at it in aggregate to see which pages are worth improving. We do not try to identify individuals, and the reports we get do not let us.

Fonts

Typefaces are served from Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com). Your browser requests them directly from Google, so Google receives your IP address and user-agent when a page loads. Google states it does not use Google Fonts requests to build advertising profiles. No cookies are set by this.

The feedback form

If you send feedback, it is submitted to Netlify Forms, the form handling built into our host. It stores what you type and, if you choose to provide it, your email address, so that we can reply. Nothing else is attached to it.

The email field is optional. Leave it blank and we simply have no way to respond.

Embedded video

The travel page embeds two videos from YouTube, using YouTube's youtube-nocookie.com privacy-enhanced player. In that mode YouTube sets no cookies unless you actually press play, and we verified that loading the page contacts none of Google's advertising domains. YouTube still receives your IP address in order to serve the player itself. That is Google's data, governed by Google's privacy policy, not ours.

Live conditions data

The travel and fog pages call small server functions on our host, which fetch current weather, road and camera information from public agency sources. Those requests are made by our server, not your browser, so the agencies do not see your IP address. Your address reaches our host in the course of the request, as it does for any page you load; we do not store it or attach it to anything.

Traffic camera images

The camera pictures themselves are a different matter, and worth being clear about. They are loaded directly from the Virginia Department of Transportation (snapshot.vdotcameras.com) by your browser, not proxied through us. VDOT therefore receives your IP address when a page showing camera images loads. We have no control over what they log.

Things kept in your browser

One thing, and it is your light/dark preference — stored under fgm-theme in your browser's local storage so the site opens the way you left it. Nothing else is kept. It stays on your device, is never transmitted to us, and clearing your browser data removes it.

What we do not do

• No accounts, no signups, no newsletters.
• No advertising networks, no remarketing, no ad cookies.
• We do not sell, rent or share personal information.
• No profiling, and nothing here is used to make decisions about you.
• Apart from the feedback form, this site has nothing to fill in and asks you for nothing. Links to our Instagram are ordinary links — nothing from it loads until you click one.

Opting out

To exclude yourself from analytics, use Google's opt-out browser add-on, or block analytics with any content blocker — everything on this site works normally with analytics blocked, because the measurement code is separate from the pages themselves. Clearing cookies for fancygap.guide removes the analytics cookies.

Your rights

We hold no account and no profile for you, so in most cases there is nothing to look up. If you have sent us feedback with an email address and want it deleted, email us and we will remove it. For the analytics data, the opt-out and cookie clearing above are the practical controls, and everything expires after 14 months.

Children

These are general-purpose reference tools, not aimed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.

Changes

If what we collect changes, this page changes with it and the date below moves. There is no mailing list to notify, by design.
