Cana

About 7 miles south via US-52

The farming country south of Fancy Gap, down off the mountain on the warm side of the ridge. Because it sits below the escarpment, Cana runs milder than the crest: a longer growing season and a good deal less snow. That gentler ground is what makes it produce country, with roadside stands and family orchards along US-52 through the summer and fall.

Lambsburg

I-77 Exit 1, about 7.5 interstate miles south

The first place you reach in Virginia coming north on I-77: a small roadside community at Exit 1, right where the land starts to climb toward Fancy Gap. It's the last flat ground before the long grade, and the back way up from here, State Route 620 over the mountain, is a genuinely fun drive for anyone who likes a mountain road.

Woodlawn

About 10 miles northwest via US-58

Gentle farming country on the plateau where US-58 and US-221 run together between Hillsville and Galax. Woodlawn's claim to fame is its school: the first in the whole country to teach vocational agriculture, under the 1917 Smith-Hughes Act, and now on the National Register of Historic Places.

Dugspur

About 17 miles north-northeast via US-221

Dugspur sits on US-221, signed Floyd Pike, in the northern part of Carroll County where the plateau begins tilting toward the New River Valley. At about 2,660 feet it shares Fancy Gap's highland climate. A crossroads community with a post office dating to 1850, the Dugspur Community Center, and scenic backroads winding down toward Big Reed Island Creek.

Laurel Fork

About 20 miles north via the Parkway

Laurel Fork is a rural community along the Blue Ridge Parkway corridor, sitting a little higher with long views across several ridges. Understanding These Places

  • What to expect

These are close-knit rural communities where everyday life moves at a quieter pace. You may pass historic churches, family farms, local gathering places, small businesses, and scenic back roads along the way. The experience is less about traditional attractions and more about discovering the landscapes, stories, and community character that make the Blue Ridge feel like home.

  • Getting around

Most communities are accessed via two-lane state routes or county roads. Drives are scenic but can be slow: curves, hills, and the occasional tractor. Allow extra time and enjoy the countryside.

  • Services

Services vary from place to place: some communities have a gas station or country store, even a place to eat, while others are a church, a post office and a scatter of homes, and cell coverage can be patchy. You'll find fuel and a bite at Fancy Gap's Exit 8, and Hillsville, the county seat, is a short drive north with shops, restaurants and a full grocery.

  • Privacy and respect

Stop where you're welcome, at the roadside stands, community centers, and local shops, and enjoy the scenery, but respect that people here value their privacy and their property. A friendly wave is appreciated; stopping to photograph someone's home is not.
