Fancy Gap is a small mountain community that rewards arriving without a rigid plan. Some of the best of it is right in town: a cluster of antique and craft shops, a few locally owned places to eat, and artisans and galleries. The rest is the landscape itself: the ridges, the overlooks, and the winding roads that keep opening onto long views.

Farther out, the area opens up into scenic drives along the ridge and down the escarpment, trails and open country, roadside produce stands in the valleys below, and a handful of small mountain towns within half an hour, each with its own character.

Shopping

Shopping in Fancy Gap runs to antiques, vintage, and handmade, the kind of browsing you do a shop at a time along US-52 rather than at any sort of mall. Near the top of the mountain, The Nest & Hive Shoppe pairs antiques and collectibles with gifts and home goods, and the owners are known for handing browsers a cup of coffee or cider while they look. Down the highway, Fancy Gap Vintage carries vintage and antique furniture and home pieces, with the stock turning over often. The Outpost at Fancy Gap spreads its antiques and finds across two buildings and a front porch, and puts on the occasional Saturday with live music and food trucks. Fancy Gap Antiques & Collectibles is another stop for browsers along the highway. And Holler & Ridge Trading Post, a gift shop and trading post along US-52, is worth a look.

For crafts, gifts, and makers, Fancy Gap Pottery & Fabric Outlet is the big one, a sprawling outlet just off I-77 at Exit 8, with a whole side given over to fabric and a year-round Christmas shop. Foggy Mountain Variety Shoppe leans to handmade wreaths and gifts. Mountaintop Exchange, in the old garden-center building just past the stone bridge, carries mountain- and Western-style clothing alongside a few handmade odds and ends. And Blue Ridge Arts Center, in a log cabin beside the post office, is as much studio as store. It runs pottery and craft classes and shows and sells work by regional artists.

A bit farther afield, a few nearby towns make a good half-day shopping trip. Hillsville, the Carroll County seat just up I-77, has a revitalizing downtown of local shops around its historic courthouse square, and over Labor Day weekend the VFW's Hillsville Flea Market & Gun Show (one of the largest in the Southeast, running since the late 1960s) turns the county seat into a sprawl of antiques, tools, and trading. Galax, about half an hour west, has a walkable downtown of antique shops and boutiques, in a town long known for its old-time-music heritage. And Floyd, about 45 minutes to the northeast, is a small arts town of galleries and studios anchored by the Floyd Country Store and its Friday Night Jamboree.

Hours are seasonal, so it's worth checking ahead, especially outside summer and leaf season.

Where to Eat

Dining in Fancy Gap is small-scale and locally owned, clustered along US-52 near the Parkway. The Gap Deli at the Parkway, at milepost 199.4, does salads, sandwiches, soups and desserts; don't miss the meatloaf sandwich, a local favorite. It's the natural stop if you're passing through. Fancy Gap Country Store & BBQ is a full restaurant behind the storefront, known for its barbecue, hearty dinners, and weekend breakfast served Saturday and Sunday mornings from 8. Once a month, on the last Saturday, it puts on a reservation-only fine-dining evening built around a prime rib dinner. It is also one of the better places locally to catch live music: a bluegrass jam on Thursday evenings and an old-time jam on Sunday afternoons, where musicians turn up with fiddles and banjos. For a sit-down dinner, Pit Stop Pasta & Grill is a local favorite, an Italian kitchen near the Fancy Gap exit and US-52 with a big, loyal following.

About fifteen minutes north, Hillsville widens the choice. In and around town you'll find local favorites: diners like The Mason Jar, Earl's Diner and the Hillsville Diner, plus Toasters Deli, Crooked Oak, Pizza Perfect on Main, Bella Italia and Rio Grande Mexican Grill. The familiar chains, among them McDonald's, Wendy's, Hardee's and Taco Bell, sit closer in near the Exit 14 interchange, about six miles up I-77.

Hours shift with the season and some places close midweek, so call ahead outside summer.

Scenic Driving

Around here the roads are often the point. The Blue Ridge Parkway runs right along the ridge near milepost 199.4, a slow ridge-top drive with an overlook around every few bends. The I-77 crossing is a different animal, a long steady haul up the face of the mountain that gives you a real sense of its scale. And the back roads out toward Hillsville, Galax, and down into North Carolina are the quiet ones, winding through farmland and forest at their own pace.
